Biography[]
Early life[]
Robert was married to his wife, Leslie Bennett. On September 14, 2001, Leslie gave birth to their first daughter who they decided to name Rue. In the hospital, the two watched news reports on the recent events of 9/11 on the hospital's television as they cared for their daughter. Later on, they had another child named Gia.
Years later, Robert and Leslie recognized that Rue was developing behavioral problems and took her to a therapist, who diagnosed her with OCD, ADD, general anxiety disorder, and possibly bipolar disorder. When Rue was 10 or 11, Robert was diagnosed with an unknown disease. Months later, after Rue had turned 11, he received a positive prognosis (approximately 80/20) and the family decided to celebrate with Chinese food; that night, Rue had a panic attack in bed and her parents took her to the hospital. There, the doctors administered her liquid Valium, Rue's first exposure to addictive drugs.
By the time Rue was 13, she was taking care of her father after school every day, as her mother was working extra jobs to cover the medical bills. Although a state-issued nurse would come daily for two hours, Rue noted that she would always "just play Candy Crush on her phone". One night, due to her father being "too out of it" to notice, Rue started taking some of her father's Oxycontin to get high alongside him. When Rue was 14, Robert passed away. A picture depicting him and his wife still remains in the Bennett's bathroom.
