I always find the way to make my money back. I'm serious.
— Laurie to Rue[src]

Laurie is a recurring character in the second season of Euphoria. She is portrayed by Martha Kelly.

Biography[]

Early life[]

When she was younger, Laurie was a successful collegiate athlete, but suffered a shoulder injury that required several surgeries over the years. After graduating, she became a schoolteacher with her own family. She was prescribed oxycontin to alleviate her pain and become addicted to it. It was during withdrawals that she realized she would do anything to ease it. It is likely that Laurie's family separated from her as a result of her drug abuse.

Eventually, Laurie quit her job in order to become a full time dealer. At some point, she met and became romantically involved with Bruce. She also either gave birth or became a stepmother to Bruce Jr.. According to Custer, before Mouse's death, she was his main supplier.

Season 2[]

Trying to Get to Heaven Before They Close the Door[]

Laurie is first seen sitting on a chair in her apartment, telling her partner Bruce to force Fezco, Custer, Faye, Ashtray, and Rue to strip their clothes and ensure that they're not wearing wires. After the situation calms down, Laurie questions Fezco on his decision to bring a child and high schooler to a drug deal. After Fezco vouches for his trust in the two, she agrees to become his new supplier.

Ruminations: Big and Little Bullys[]

Laurie is given a proposal by Rue to become another runner and front a suitcase of drugs. Although seeming to be disinterested, Laurie quickly accepts the proposition and initially offers a $50,000 suitcase, but is talked down to $10,000 by Rue. Laurie tells Rue that if she is screwed over, that she will sell her to some "real sick people".

Stand Still Like the Hummingbird[]

Rue, who is suffering from withdrawals, shows up at Laurie's doorstep. Rue attempts to pay her back in stolen cash and jewelry, but is rejected. Laurie tells Rue that she isn't angry, but is disappointed that Rue lied. Laurie tells Rue her backstory and offers her morphine to ease the withdrawal symptoms. Rue passes out and Laurie brings her to the bathtub, injecting her with morphine. Laurie gives her a fresh change of clothes and puts her in bed. She is last seen sleeping in bed with Bruce as Rue escapes the apartment.

Personality[]

Laurie is shown, unlike her employees, to be calm and soft-spoken, as well as cautious, as she had everyone strip-searched for wires and later apologized for the incident.

Regardless of her typical calm composure, Laurie has no qualms about threatening people, especially if they try to mess with her or her money; she openly explained to Rue the possible outcomes of her actions regardless of her being unable to pay Laurie back for a luggage of drugs.

Relationships[]

Rue Bennett[]

It's one of the good parts of being a woman: even if you don't have money, you've still got something people want.
— Laurie to Rue[src]

Rue and Laurie's relationship seems to be strictly business but proves to be more sinister. Rue's opinion of Laurie is initially extremely high, as she is rare in being a female drug lord. Although Laurie seems tolerant and patient of Rue, she still threatens to sell her into sexual slavery if she isn't paid back, scaring Rue.

Rue unknowingly has the suitcase disposed of by her mother and owes Laurie $13,000. Rue turns to Laurie out of desperation in "Stand Still Like the Hummingbird"; after trying to go to Fezco's and the Howard's house. Laurie administers Rue morphine to ease her withdrawal symptoms and Rue asks her to lock her in a room. Although seeming to be an act of kindness, It is highly possible that Laurie is manipulating Rue, aware of her deception from the beginning. As Laurie was once an addict herself, she likely knew that Rue was planning to get high from the suitcase she supplied, knowing that Rue wouldn't be able to pay her back and ultimately get trafficked.

Bruce[]

Bruce is Laurie's romantic and professional partner. They likely have a strong marriage, as Bruce is highly protective of her and their business.

Bruce Jr.[]

It is unknown if Bruce Jr. is Laurie's biological son or stepson. Regardless, the two likely have a decent relationship as they work together to operate her drug business.

Custer[]

Laurie was Custer's primary supplier before he met Mouse. Despite their previous relationship together, Laurie still showed distrust toward Custer and his associates, forcing them to undress in case he wore a wire. Custer is also shown to be afraid of Laurie and her associates, acting extremely skittish around them.

Physical appearance[]

Laurie is a dark haired, middle aged white woman and wears red lipstick and loose fitting clothing.

Quotes[]

Sorry about all the hubbub, guys. Just being careful.
— Laurie to Fezco and the others[src]
Rue, if you screw me, I have you kidnapped and sold to some really sick people.
— Laurie to Rue[src]
You know, a doctor once told me they did brain studies on people who've done a lot of opiates, and that over time, all the chemicals in your brain that make you happy and feel good, start to decrease because your body's getting it artificially. But the longer you use, it just starts to weaken and wither; kind of like a limb that's not getting blood to it anymore, and then it just sort of falls off. Then you get something called 'cell death' when you just have these big dead spots in the parts of your brain [...] but no matter what you do, you cannot get it back. He said it's basically the same brain as people who've had major strokes. But the silver lining is that the things that don't feel good, don't feel as bad anymore.
