Euphoria is an American adaptation of an Israeli show of the same name, and all episodes are written by Sam Levinson (Assassination Nation), who also serves as executive producer. The series is produced in partnership with A24 (Lady Bird, Random Acts of Flyness, 2 Dope Queens, Pod Save America). Ron Leshem and Daphna Levin, who created the Israeli series, are also executive producers.

On July 11, 2019 it was announced that HBO had renewed the series for a second season.[1]

On October 19, 2020 HBO announced that Euphoria would return for two special episodes that were intended to bridge the gap between its successful first and second season.[2] The first special premiered on December 6, 2020 and had an early streaming premiere on HBO Max December 4 and 3, 2020.[3] The second special premiered on January 24, 2020 and[4] had an early streaming premiere on HBO Max on January 22, 2021.[5]

On April 19, 2021, A24 announced The Euphoria Books: S1 Boxed Set, a collection of 8 books featuring every written script from the first season of the series alongside exclusive interviews with the cast. The boxed set went on sale on April 27, 2021 for $98 USD.[6][7]

The eight-episode second season premiered on January 9, 2022 (9:00 p.m. ET/PT) on HBO and is available to stream on HBO Max.[8]

On February 4, 2022, it was announced that HBO had renewed the series for a third season.[9][10]

Euphoria follows a group of high school students as they navigate love and friendships in a world of drugs, sex, trauma, and social media. Actor and singer Zendaya leads an ensemble cast including Hunter Schafer, Jacob Elordi, Algee Smith and Sydney Sweeney.

Seventeen-year-old Rue returns home from rehab with no plans to stay clean. She meets Jules, who's new in town, at a party at McKay's house. Nate gets in McKay's head when McKay takes an interest in Cassie. Nate and Maddy, who have broken up once again, attempt to make each other jealous. Meanwhile, Kat is pressured to lose something.

Development

On June 1, 2017, it was announced that HBO was developing an adaptation of the 2012 Israeli television series Euphoria created by Ron Leshem, Daphna Levin, and Tmira Yardeni. The production was expected to be written by Sam Levinson who was also set to executive produce alongside Leshem, Levin, Yardeni, Hadas Mozes Lichtenstein, Mirit Toovi, Yoram Mokadi, and Gary Lennon.

On March 13, 2018, HBO Programming President Casey Bloys announced at the INTV conference in Jerusalem that the network had given the production a pilot order. It was further announced that A24 Television would serve as a production company for the pilot.

On March 27, 2018, it was announced that Augustine Frizzell would direct the pilot episode and serve as co-executive producer. On July 30, 2018, it was announced that HBO had given the production a series order. It was further announced that every episode of the series will be written by Levinson, additional executive producers are to include Drake, Future the Prince, Ravi Nandan, and Kevin Turen, and that production companies involved with the production are slated to include A24 Television.

Filming

Production for the second season was scheduled to start in the second quarter of 2020, with the first table read taking place on March 11.[11] However, HBO paused production on the second season due to the novel coronavirus, COVID-19.[12] According to the website Backstage filming on the second season began on April 5, 2021 in Los Angeles.[13]

Casting

On June 5, 2018, it was announced that the pilot would star Zendaya, Storm Reid, Maude Apatow, Brian Bradley, Eric Dane, Angus Cloud, Alexa Demie, Jacob Elordi, Barbie Ferreira, Nika King, Hunter Schafer, and Sydney Sweeney. On October 31, 2018, it was reported that Algee Smith had been cast to replace Brian "Astro" Bradley in the series regular role of McKay, which Bradley had played in the pilot episode. It was further reported that Austin Abrams had also been cast in the series.

  • The series premiere night has already delivered more than 5.5 million viewers across HBO's platforms.[1]
  • Euphoria ranks as the youngest-skewing drama series on HBO's digital platforms.[1]
  • Just days into preparing episodes for its second season, Euphoria was among the many shows where production was halted in March as a safety precaution.[14]
  • Speaking on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Zendaya told guest host Ben Platt that the producers are working on a bridge episode that can be done with a limited crew while they figure out how to return to shoot the rest of Season 2.[14]
  • For the second season they had already done table reads, wardrobe fittings and all kinds of things and they got shut down, literally two days before they were about to start the first day of shooting.[14]

  • During an interview on IndieWire's Filmmaker Toolkit podcast, Levinson confirmed the plan was to start filming the second season in late March and start rollout on completed episodes on HBO before the end of December.[16]
