Katherine "Kat" Hernandez is a main character in the first and second seasons of Euphoria. She is portrayed by Barbie Ferreira, while her 11-year-old counterpart is portrayed by Johanna Colón.
Kat is a body-conscious teen who starts the school year looking to change her reputation.
Biography[]
Early life[]
Kat had a peaceful and relatively good childhood, without any trauma or complications. During the 6th grade, she got in her first relationship with a boy named Daniel Dimarco, who treated her kindly, like texting her before going to bed or waiting for her outside of school every day, so they could walk together through the hallway while holding hands. She never understood why he chose her, or what he liked about her, but she was still happy with him nonetheless. During that time, she also befriended Maddy Perez.
At the age of eleven, Kat went on holiday to Jamaica for eight days. After getting stung by a jellyfish while swimming in the ocean, she decided to spend the rest of her holiday sunbathing and drinking virgin piña coladas. By drinking seventy-two drinks during these eight days, she gained twenty pounds. After coming back, Kat couldn't fit in any of her clothes, so she tried to minimize the change, by wearing multiple layers of sweatshirts, but this proved to be unhelpful. Daniel acted oblivious at first, but in the end, he "broke up" with her via a note during the fourth period, although the note wasn't even written by him but by another girl named Kendra Sutherland. Aside from the first heartbreak in her life, Kat also became very self-conscious about her looks, completely pushing back the idea of being in love, while implicitly fantasize about being in a loving relationship by watching tons of romance movies.
The summer before her freshman year of high school, Kat started writing fan fiction on Tumblr, and quickly became one of the most popular smut writers on the website, getting more than 184,000 notes on her Larry Stylinson fan fiction and around 53,000 followers on her blog. Despite gaining this amount of popularity, no one in real life knew anything about it. Not only that but Kat's life in comparison to her more extroverted and confident friends was quite depressing, as she was often left out by them, teased by peers due to her weight, and had no love life.
While attending summer school for Intro in Visual Arts, Kat befriended Jules Vaughn who highly encouraged her to get someone to have sex with.
Season 1[]

While at Maddy's house with her and BB, Kat tries to help Maddy get over her breakup with Nate Jacobs by calling him a loser and telling her that she needs to hook up with someone else to take her mind off him; however, after BB teases Kat over being a virgin herself, she goes quiet. Seeing this, Maddy tells BB to stop before the three are interrupted by Maddy's father, who quickly shuts the door after Maddy shouts at him. At the party, Kat is pressured into having sex with a St. Mary's student named Wes.
Afterwards, Kat discovers that a video of her hook up with Wes had been uploaded and put up for the world to see. She confronts Troy McKay, who tells her that his brother, Roy McKay, had uploaded the video. After she threatens to go to the police, Troy agrees to tell everyone that she wasn't in the video. Later on, Kat is called down by Principal Hayes, who Kat accuses of body shaming in order to make him backpedal and retract his suspicions that she was the one in the video.
The third episode begins with an introduction to Kat’s past. Her childhood, weight gain and loss of her first boyfriend acts as the catalyst for what follows from there. We see her rise to the top of Tumblr, courtesy of her erotic fiction, before bringing us right back to the recent uploaded sex video. Determined to ride this wave of newfound internet fame, she dons a mask and twerks in the doorway, recording it for a porn site. Kat starts talking to a guy online named Johnny who is willing to pay her for a Skype session. Unsure how wiring money works, she heads off to ask Fez for advice on how to use Bitcoin. With renowned confidence following her Skype conversation with Johnny, Kat dons a new appearance and rocks up at school a changed girl.
Season 2[]
After quitting her job as a dominatrix, Kat struggles with an identity crisis. She is really anxious about not knowing what she wants and who she is and has had mental breakdowns over this. She is miserable in her relationship with Ethan and feels like she can't love him no matter how sweet he is to her.
Kat also really struggles with her self esteem this season, constantly feeling like she hates herself but not being able to tell anyone because she will be judged for not being "body positive". Kat also realized that becoming a sex worker only looked empowering and didn't really help her overcome her issues about her body.

She was in a relationship with Daniel in the 6th grade, however he breaks up with her when she gained weight after coming back from a vacation.
At Daniel's Halloween party, Kat tells him that Ted Bundy was taller, referring to his costume. Later at the party, she has sex with Daniel. She mentions their relationship in the 6th grade and how she imagined losing her virginity to him. In response, Daniel tells Kat that he does not remember their relationship in the 6th grade.

Barbara Brookes[]
Despite being in the same friend group, Barbara and Kat aren't as close as the other girls in the group; during season 1, Barbara often teased Kat about her lack of experience in sexual relationships. Nevertheless, BB was the first person Kat told about losing her virginity at the party. During Kat's heated argument with Maddy, Barbara was visibly enjoying herself by acting as a commentator between them, however, it's unknown whether she has done this because of her relationship with Kat or it was because of her drama-loving personality.
In season 2, their relationship is more stable and less hostile as BB was cheering for Kat's new relationship with Ethan.
Personality[]
Kat is initially noted to be sardonic, self conscious and shy. She hates her real life and used the Internet for means of escapism, such as writing graphic fan fiction. After a sexual video of her is leaked and she decides to become a dominatrix, Kat becomes more confident and outspoken, which allows her to get more male attention, but starts to damage her actual friendships. She is apparently sensitive about entering relationships and intimacy, as she initially rejects Ethan for a majority of the first season until finally opening up to him, explaining her fears of being rejected as she was with Daniel when she gained weight as a child.
Physical appearance[]
Kat is an plus sized teenage girl, with chin-length mahogany hair, ivory skin and dark brown eyes. At the beginning, she wears glasses with cat-eye frames, and her every day clothes often being average shirts, tops and dresses, and prefers minimal makeup looks.
However, after becoming a dominatrix, her style switched over to more eye-catching, revealing, and somewhat rebellious, often including to her outfits accessories or materials that are related to bondage such as harnesses, chokers, latex, and meshes. She also started to wear more intense makeup and stopped wearing her glasses.
As "KittenKween", she wears black lingerie with harnesses and chokers and a black cat mask with golden adornments.
In Season 2 after having left the sex work environment Kat changes the way she looks and goes for less sexualized and bold looks. She doesn't revert back to her primal style though, as she's still wearing colorful makeup and fashionable outfits so now she's picked a middle ground.

- In "Pilot", Kat calls out "Yo, Casper! You want a ride?", a reference to Casper the Friendly Ghost.
- Kat wrote smut (fan) fiction in her past summer before high school as said in "Made You Look". She rose to popularity online when she wrote "The First Night," a One Direction fan-fiction about the "Larry Stylinson" conspiracy theory. Another one of these pairings involved Emma Swan from Once Upon A Time, whose real life actor, Jennifer Morrison, would direct "'03 Bonnie and Clyde".
- Kat's secondary style was inspired by Barbie Ferreira's real world style. Ferreira also came up with the idea for the short cut hair, inspired by Enid Coleslaw from Ghost World.
- Kat's Halloween costume was Thana from the 1981 exploitation thriller, Ms .45.
- Kat's makeup is more "experimental" than the other girls and has a rebellious glam edge, as it coincides with her sexual awakening and journey to self-actualization.
- On August 24, 2022, Barbie Ferreira posted on her Instagram story that she would not be back to play Kat for Season 3 of Euphoria.
