Production[]

Production on the season began in February 2023 in Los Angeles, California, aiming for a early to mid 2024 release.[9] However, the release was pushed back to 2025. It was confirmed it was renewed for 8 episodes. On March 12, 2024, Sydney Sweeney revealed in an MTV interview with Josh Horowitz that filming for the season was to "start soon".[10] Despite this, on March 25, it was reported that filming was postponed indefinitely, although the season is still slated for a 2025 release. In addition, the cast members were allowed to "pursue other opportunities" in the meantime.[11] Julio C. Perez IV, Marcell Rév, Doniella Davy, Ryan Heffington, and Kim Kimble return to help behind the camera, while Coleen Atwood, Natasha Newman-Thomas and François Audouy join the crew.[6]

Filming[]

Principal photography was set to begin in January 2025.[5] It later began on February 10, 2025.[12][13] Dominic Fike will return to shoot a couple of scenes for the show beginning February 17.[7]

Casting[]

In August 2022, Barbie Ferreira, who portrayed Kat Hernandez for the first two seasons, announced her departure from the series ahead of its third season.[14] In July 2023, Angus Cloud tragically died from an accidental drug overdose.[15][16] Because of this, he will not be returning as Fezco for the third season, which possibly impacted the storyline due to Fezco having a strong role.[17] In July 2024, it was confirmed that Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney, Jacob Elordi, Eric Dane, Maude Apatow, Alexa Demie, Hunter Schafer, Nika King, Colman Domingo and Dominic Fike would return for the season.[5] In November 2024, Storm Reid, who portrayed Gia Bennett for the first two seasons, confirmed that she would be leaving the series ahead of the third season.[18] In February 2025, it was re-confirmed that Zendaya, Sweeney, Elodri, Schafer, Dabe, Demie, Apatow and Fike would return as series regulars, while Martha Kelly and Chloe Cherry were upped to series regulars.[1][7] In addition, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje and Toby Wallace joined the cast in recurring roles, while Domingo would guest star alongside new cast members: ROSALIÁ, Marshawn Lynch, Darrell Britt-Gibson, Kadeem Hardison, Priscilla Delgado, James Landry Hébert and Anna Van Patten.[1] Formerly, King, Algee Smith and Austin Abrams were not announced to be returning.[1][6][7] It was also reported that Sharon Stone was in negotiations to join the season, which is a casting that has been tracked for weeks with an announcement pending following the closing of her contract.[19] Stone was officially confirmed to have joined the cast.[8]

Trivia[]

  • It's been reported that Heidi Bivens, the costume designer, will not be returning for Season 3. Angelina Vitto, her assistant costume designer in Season 2, will take the reins.[2]
  • According to Zendaya, Season 3 could potentially "explore the characters out of high school", suggesting a significant time jump in season 3 .[20]
  • On November 2, 2023, Season 3 was slated for 2025 release, announced by HBO boss Casey Bloys at a press event. The Sam Levinson series’ title was shown in a sizzle reel that said “Coming in 2025” alongside “The Last of Us” Season 2, “The White Lotus” Season 3 and the “It” prequel series “Welcome to Derry.”[21]
  • On November 12, 2023, Kevin Turen died from acute cardiac dysfunction and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, after suffering a cardiac emergency while driving his Tesla vehicle on autopilot mode. He was unable to return as executive producer for the third season because of this. His death happened exactly three days after the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike came to an end.
  • On February 14, 2025, it was confirmed that the eight-episode season will feature a time jump that takes the characters out of high school, and is set to premiere in 2026, four years after the show’s Season 2 run.[1]
