Euphoria was renewed for a second season on July 11, 2019 by HBO. Production started in February 2020, only to be postponed due to the circumstances involving COVID-19.
During an interview on IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast, Sam Levinson confirmed the plan was to start filming the second season in late March of 2021 and start rollout on completed episodes on HBO before the end of December.[1] However that plan never came to fruition as the season came out in early January, a month later than what Sam initially wanted it to be released.
The season premiered with "Trying to Get to Heaven Before They Close the Door" on January 9, 2022 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and is available to stream on HBO Max.[2] Like the first season, it consists of eight episodes.

Production[]
Sometime between February and March 2021, there was a casting call posted on the website Backstage. Filming was scheduled to start in the second quarter of 2020, with the first table read on March 11, but it was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Production of Season 2 began in March 2021, with filming following from April to November 25, 2021[3]. Filming took place at Ulysses S. Grant High School, Alta Dena Dairy, Bowlium Lanes[4] in Montclair, CA., Favorite Liquor[5] in Burbank, CA., and Odd Ball Cabaret[6][7] in North Hills, CA.
Trivia[]
- The entire season was filmed in the 35mm format on Kodak Ektachrome, thanks to Kodak converting parts of its factory to make it possible. According to director of photography Marcell Rév, "Season 1 was very in the moment, and had a present feel to it. Season 2 feels like some sort of memory of high school. Emotionally—the [Ektachrome] film felt like the right choice."[8]
- This season takes place between December 31, 2018 and February 2019.
- HBO Max had so much activity from fans on the season premiere night that it caused HBO Max to crash.[9]
- The season premiere night tallied more than 2.4 million viewers across HBO’s platforms, marking the strongest digital premiere night performance for any episode of an HBO series.[10]
- The second season premiere scored more than nine times higher than its first season premiere in digital viewing, which came in June 2019 via HBO Go and HBO Now.[11]
- According to Eliana Victoria Alcouloumre, Season 2 filmed for 150 days and filming officially ended on November 25, 2021. 150 days before then was June 28, 2021, which could possibly be the first week of filming.
- According to the mass casting call held, shooting would have potentially began late March and carried onto December and introduced brand new characters.
- Just days into preparing episodes for its second season, Euphoria was among the many shows where production was halted in March as a safety precaution.[12]
- For the second season they had already done table reads, wardrobe fittings and all kinds of things, before they got shut down, two days before they were about to start the first day of shooting.[12]
- According to the website Backstage, filming on the season began on April 5, 2021 in Los Angeles.[13]
- This season continues the theme of naming episodes after songs, but is not strict to it, such as with the title for episode 3.
- According Google Trends, Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney, Hunter Schafer, Alexa Demie, and Dominic Fike are the top searched Euphoria cast members in the United States.[14]
- Stand Still Like the Hummingbird, The Theater and Its Double, and A Thousand Little Trees of Blood are the top three most-tweeted episodes.[15]
