Biography[]

Season 2[]

"Ruminations: Big and Little Bullys"[]

Derek is first seen wrestling with a young Cal in their teenage years. The two are watched by a group of girls, including Cal's future wife Marsha. The pair are then seen in Cal's bedroom excitedly talking about Cal and Marsha's first sexual encounter. At some point, Derek begins dating Lisa. During a date night, Cal, Derek, Marsha, and Derek's girlfriend go skinny dipping in Cal's pool. Over time, Derek and Marsha begin to resent each other due to jealousy over their respective relationship's with Cal. After the two graduate, Derek intends to go to a state school.

Shortly after graduation, Derek takes Cal to a gay bar to celebrate. After ordering some shots, they put on a song on the jukebox. They dance together and after some hesitation, share an emotional kiss. It is never revealed what happened between Cal and Derek after this encounter. [2]

"You Who Cannot See, Think of Those Who Can"[]

In a drunken state, 25 years later, Cal dances with another man at the same bar and briefly envisions Derek in his place. He dances with an older Cal and Cal states, "I thought I lost you".[3]

Personality[]

Not much is known about Derek's personality outside of his friendship with Cal. However, he is mentioned as being extremely similar to Cal, with the two sharing many interests and capable of talking for hours about anything. Although unlike Cal, Derek seemed to be less resistant to embracing his sexuality, evidenced by Derek's prior knowledge of "The Hideaway", a gay bar, alongside his willingness to lean in first and kiss Cal.

Derek is also seen to be very spontaneous and fun-loving, shown when he randomly decides to go skinny dipping in Cal's pool. Derek also seems to possess a jealous side as well, evidenced by his deteriorating relationship with Marsha as the Cal and she became closer. After he and Marsha exchange glares, he calls Cal a "pussy" after beating him in a wrestling match.

Relationships[]

Cal Jacobs[]

Cal was Derek's best friend and short-lived romance. The two were capable of talking about anything they wanted for hours, whether it be sports or girls. They both were on the wrestling team and spent much time together outside of school. It is likely that Derek secretly reciprocated his feelings for Cal for a long time.

Marsha Jacobs[]

Derek and Marsha likely had a decent relationship, being comfortable enough to see each other naked. However, their relationship began to slowly decline as she and Cal dated, likely due to their jealousy over Cal.

Physical appearance[]

Derek is a young male of average height, dark eyes, medium-length brown hair parted down the middle, and is clean shaven. He has a lean, athletic build and fair skin. As scenes depicting Derek take place during the 1970s, his fashion consists of sleeveless shirts, long baggy jeans, denim shorts, and denim jackets.
